Apple may offer 2022 iPad Pro owners more options for connecting accessories as there are rumors of adding a pair of “four-pin connectors” to the tablet’s body.
The iPad Pro has a Smart Connector, a row of three pins located under the back of the tablet for connecting hardware such as the Magic Keyboard. If the rumors are true, this concept could extend to future iPad Pro models.
According to Chinese sources Macotakara, the overall case design for the 6th generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 4th generation 11-inch iPad Pro will be the same as the current models. However, instead of the usual three-pin Smart Connector, Apple plans to use two “four-pin” connectors.
The report says the new connector types will be on the top and bottom of the iPad Pro, but doesn’t say exactly where they will be.
Given Apple’s existing pin headers, it remains to be seen whether additional pins can be used as part of the connection. The rationale behind the report is that the extra pins can help transfer power between the iPad Pro and connected accessories.
The use of three pins in today’s smart plugs may mean that the new plugs will not be compatible with three-pin accessories. MagSafe is another pin header used on the MacBook Pro that uses five pins.
While rumors about the number of pins may be dubious, the presence of two connectors allows you to connect smaller accessories, one at each end of the tablet.
Well, I hope someone uses it, with three or four stitches. So far, with the exception of the Magic Keyboard and Logitech, the accessory community has been leaving in droves. For most things, current Bluetooth works just fine. (Typed on iPP 22 with Brydge keyboard/trackpad.)
Smart Connectors have never been implemented correctly. I think his original vision was so limited that there was little interest from third parties. So something really needs to happen to increase its usefulness. Is the goal to replace the USBc or Lightning port or expand the functionality of the accessory? However, they should provide backwards compatibility for those paying for their extremely expensive keyboard.
